Self-Moving Chessboard

Harry Potter's magic chessboa, made real. An Arduino-powered chessboard moves its own pieces with a CoreXY mechanism and electromagnet, with voice control for hands-free play.

Inspiration

Inspired by the chessboard in Harry Potter, I wanted to build a board that could move pieces on its own. I designed the chessboard using inspiration from resources on the internet teaching myself Arduino programming, soldering, CAD, and the physics of electromagnetic systems along the way.

How it works

A CoreXY mechanism positions an electromagnet beneath the board, allowing it to pull pieces across the playing surface. Hall sensors track piece positions, while Arduino microcontrollers coordinate the system. I later integrated speech recognition and voice feedback so that the board could be played completely hands-free.
